Walt Boyer, age 13, of Vancouver, Wash., for his question:~~
WHERE DOES THE TARPAN LIVE?
Scientists believe that the tarpan is the only true wild horse left on earth today. He lives on the plains of western Mongolia. Tarpan is actually the name given to two kinds of wild horses one is the Przewalski horse, which is a native to the Altai Mountains of Mongolia, and the other is the European forest horse, which has been extinct since the 1800s.
_With careful work, scientists have been able to breed a horse that is exactly like the original European forest horse. Working at the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich, Germany, scientists developed a process of back breeding which produced a small horse in the 1950s that looks just like the ancient tarpan.
