Welcome to You Ask Andy

Lorna Sterrett, age 11, of Wilmington, Del., for her question:

WHAT IS THE LARGEST LAKE IN ENGLAND?

A beautiful body of water in northwestern England called Windermere is that country's largest lake. The surrounding scenery has inspired many English poets, including William Wordsworth, Robert Southey and Samuel Coleridge.

Lake Windermere isn't actually a gigantic body of water. It covers just under six square miles, is about 10 1/2 miles long and only one mile wide at its greatest width. The water is from 30 to 200 feet deep.

A cluster of small islands can be found in the center of the lake. Wooded hills rise as much as 1,000 feet around the lake.

The River Leven flows from Windermere into Morecambe Bay.
