Libbie Everett, age 7 of New Bedford, Mass., for her question:
WHERE DOES THE GNU LIVE?
A large African antelope named the gnu can be found grazing in herds between northern Kenya and northern South Africa and South West Africa. The large creature is sometimes called the wildebeest.
Our friend the gnu has high, massive shoulders and a thick neck which supports a large head with long, curved horns. The animal also has thin legs and a horselike tail.
The gnu stands about four and a half feet high. It has a long, sad looking face.
Gnu is a name that comes from the Hottentot, an African tribe. The name wildebeest is Dutch or Afrikaans.
The gnu, which likes to dine on twigs and grass, can range in color from yellowish brown to gray. The white tailed gnu, which is almost extinct, ranges in color from brown to black.
