WHO WAS CONSTANTINE THE GREAT?
Constantine the Great was Emperor Constantine I, the first ruler of Rome to become a Christian. He was born about A.D. 275 and lived until about 337.
During Constantine the Great's reign, Christians gained freedom of worship and the Christian church was recognized as a legal body.
The Eastern Orthodox Churches regard Constantine as a saint. He rebuilt Byzantium, which is now Istanbul, Turkey, and renamed it Constantinople
The empire's strength started to shift from Rome to the eastern provinces. Some historians consider this the start of the Byzantine history.
Constantine built the first great Christian cathedral, the Lateran Basilica in Rome. He also built many other famous churches.
