Jana Nunnally, age 44, of Bowling Green, Ohio, for her question:
WHERE CAN YOU FIND EGRETS?
An egret is a snow white heron. It is a beautiful bird with long, graceful plumes that grow between the shoulder blades and extend over and beyond the tail.
Originally, the bird could only be found in Europe. They were particularly numerous in India.
Then, in 4942, some of the birds were discovered living in Florida. They were protected and now can be found in many parts of the United States. In fact, they are rather common in parts of South Carolina, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
Since early times, people of rank in oriental countries have worn egret plumes, called aigrettes. Egret plumes are still used as ornaments on many hats.
