Leona Kelsey, age 10, of Jackson, Miss., for her question:
ARE THERE GLACIERS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK?
Glacier National Park in northern Montana is open to tourists only during the summer. It gets cold in that part of the world because there are so many glaciers.
In the park you'll find more than 50 glaciers. These beds of ice are the remains of a large system of mountain glaciers that once covered the entire area. Some of the glaciers are small but others are very large. The park's largest, Blackfoot Glacier, covers about three square miles. It lies about 8,000 feet above sea level on the north slopes ` of Mount Jackson and Blackfoot Mountain.
A Canadian preserve, Waterton Lakes National Park, lies to the north of Glacier National Park. In 1932, the two parks were united by the U.S. and Canadian governments. Together they are called the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park, although they are under separate administrations.
