John Fifield, age 14, of Patterson, N.J., for his question:
WHEN WAS BLAIR HOUSE BUILT?
Blair House is a historic mansion in Washington, D.C., that is used as the official guesthouse for visiting top ranking foreign visitors. It is located very near the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue.
The yellow stucco four story mansion was built in 1824 by a doctor named Joseph Lovell. Lovell was the United States Army's first surgeon general.
Francis Preston Blair Sr., a member of President Andrew Jackson's, "Kitchen Cabinet," purchased the home in 1836. Later he built a mansion next door, called the Blair Lee House, for his daughter.
The United States government purchased Blair House from the Blair family in 1942. Blair Lee House was acquired in 1944.
President Harry Truman lived in Blair House from 1948 until 1952 while the White House was being reconstructed and redecorated.
