Wally Murray, age 10, of Denton. Texas, for his question:
WHAT ARE HOUND DOGS?
Hound is a name given to a group of dogs. Hounds are of two types: dogs that hunt by following the scent of the quarry, and those that hunt by sight.
Scent hunting hounds include the foxhound, coonhound, beagle, bloodhound, basset hound and dachshund.
Among the sight hounds are the greyhound, Afghan, borzoi, Scottish ' deerhound, Saluki and the Irish wolfhound.
The typical hound has long ears, strong legs and a long tail. Hounds are also alert, love the outdoors and have great endurance.
Hounds are among the oldest known dogs in the world.
