Christine Durke, age 12, of Danville, I11., for her question:
WHEN WAS KNUTE ROCKNE COACH AT NOTRE DAME?
Almost all sports experts agree that Knute Rockne was one of the greatest all American football coaches. He served as the head football coach at Notre Dame University from 1918 until his death in 1931.
Rockne won fame for his, insistence on good sportsmanship, and for his clever football strategy. He was truly a master in understanding the sport.
Rockne perfected the famous "Rockne system" of offensive football, which made the forward pass and fast, deceptive plays popular in college football.
His football teams at Notre Dame won 105 games, tied 5 and lost only 12.
Rockne was born in Voss, Norway, and came to the United States in 1893 at the age of five. He studied chemistry and played football at Notre Dame. He was graduated in 1914 and then served as a chemistry instructor and assistant football coach for four years. Rockne was killed in an airplane crash in Kansas.
