Welcome to You Ask Andy

Karen Webb, age 14, of Santa Cruz, Calif., for her question:

WHERE DOES THE NARWHAL WHALE LIVE?

Narwhal is an unusual whale that you'll find living in the Arctic.  The male has a spiral ivory tusk that is about eight feet long. Norwhals grow to about 18 feet long and the unusual tusk juts out of the left side of its head.

The tusk is really the narwhal's only tooth. A few narwhals, mostly females, have two tusks although the female ordinarily has no tusk. As far as is known, the adult makes no use of its tusks.

Young male narwhals find a use for their tusks. They often duel in play fighting.  An adult narwhal will weigh about two tons. They are gray white in color and have dark gray or black spots.

Eskimos of Greenland hunt narwhals. They eat the skin, which they call muktuk, and they use the ivory to make tools.
