Kelly Ann Hart, age 8, of Casper, Wyo., for her question:
WHAT IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST FLOWER?
A flower called the giant rafflesia which grows in Indonesia is the world's largest. The flower often measures three feet across. That's big!
Rafflesia is a strange genus of plant. It has huge flowers but no leaves or stems. The flowers grow as parasites on the stems and roots of several Cissus shrubs in Malaya.
The stamens and pistils of the giant rafflesia actually grow on separate flowers and they require some special agent to pollinate them.
The flowers have five wide, fleshy lobes. Also, they have an odor that can be summed up in a single word: bad.
