WHO WAS THE FIRST BLACK BASEBALL MANAGER?
Frank Robinson became the first black manager of a major league baseball team. He was named manager of the Cleveland Indians in October, 1974, after 19 yesars as one of baseball's brightest star outfielders.
At the time Robinson became manager of the Indians, he had a career batting average of .295, with 574 home runs, 1,778 runs batted in and 2,900 hits.
Robinson, who was born in Beaumont, Texas, was the first man to be named most Valuable Player in both the National and American leagues.
Robinson won the Rookie of the Year award with the Cincinnati Reds in 1956. Then in 1961 he was named the league's Most Valuable Player as the Reds won the National League pennant.
After Cincinnati traded him to the Baltimore Orioles after the 1965 season, Robinson won the American League's Most Valuable Player award in 1966.
Robinson was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers team in 1972 and played for the California Angels in 1973 before he was sold to Cleveland in 1974.
