Seth Kissel, age 14, of Columbia, Tenn., for his question:
WHO WERE ROMULUS AND REMUS?
Romulus and Remus, in Roman mythology, were the twin brothers who founded the city of Rome. The Romans say that Romulus was their first king.
A Vestal Virgin princess named Rhea Silvia was seduced by the god Mars and she gave birth to twins. The evil king had Rhea Silva executed and ordered the babies placed in a basket and thrown in the Tiber River.
Washed ashore, the twin babies Romulus and Remus were found by a female wolf and nursed by them. Later a shepherd named Faustulus discovered the boys and he and his wife raised them as their own children.
After the twins became young men and learned of their true identity, they overthrew the bad king and set out to found their own city.
Because of an act of disloyalty, Remus was killed and Romulus became the sole ruler of Rome, which he named for himself.
