Welcome to You Ask Andy

Della Herbert, age 8, of Albuquerque, N. M., for her question:

WHY IS JOGGING GOOD FOR YOU?

Jogging is a form of exercise that involves running at various speeds. Doctors say it is very good for many of us because it helps to increase endurance and improve and increase circulatory activity of the blood.

Proper circulatory activity of the blood may help prevent disease of the heart and blood vessels.

Jogging requires no special skill or equipment. A jogging program should start very gradually and increase slowly.

A person can improve his endurance by raising the rate of his heartbeat to between 130 and 150 beats per minute for a period of about 15 minutes. Running in place, or running without moving forward, provides the same benefits as actually running.

Check with your family or school doctor before you start a jogging program.
