Welcome to You Ask Andy

Becky Manning, age 11, of White Plains, N.Y., for her question:

WHERE CAN YOU FIND A CASSOWARY?

A cassowary is a large, shy bird that lives in the thick forests of Australia, New Guinea knd nearby islands. The bird cannot fly.

The cassowary has a massive body, long legs and a featherless neck and head. A bony helmet, used for butting through undergrowth, covers the head.

The largest species, the one wattled cassowary of New Guinea, stands about five feet tall and weighs about 120 pounds. Its wings and tail are small and almost hidden. Brownish black, bristlelike feathers cover the body. Each foot has three toes armed with sharp claws. These claws are deadly weapons in a fight.

Experts rate the cassowary of New Guinea and Australia as the "most dangerous" bird on earth. The bird can actually cripple or even kill a man with a kick of its claw.
