Grace Craft, age 16, of Portland, Ore., for her question:
HOW LARGE IS LAKE WINDERMERE?
Largest lake in England is a beautiful body of water called Windermere. It covers a bit less than six square miles and is from 30 to 200 feet deep. Its greatest width is about one mile and it is about ten and a half miles long.
Windermere is located in the country of Westmoreland, in northwestern England. It forms part of the famous English Lake District.
Scenery surrounding Windermere is most beautiful. The lake inspired many English poets including William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge.
Wooded hills rise as much as 1,000 feet high around Windermere. The small islands in the center of the lake form a picturesque group. The River Leven flows from Windermere into Morecambe Bay.
