Welcome to You Ask Andy

Bruce Nicholson, age 10, of New Bedford, Mass., for his question:

WHEN WAS THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL BUILT?

One of the most beautiful buildings in Washington, D.C., is the shrine to the third President of the United States and the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson. It was built at a cost of $3 million and was dedicated on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth on April 13, 1943.

Construction on the memorial started in 1938 during President Franklin Roosevelt's term of office.

The memorial is a white marble building on the south side of the Tidal Basin near the Potomac River. The shrine was designed by architects John Pope, Otto Eggers and Daniel Higgins.

The building is circular with a porch supported by 12 columns. The design is based on the classical style of the architecture, which Jefferson introduced into the United States.

A 19 foot statue of Jefferson stands inside the memorial. It is the work of an American sculptor named Rudulph Evans.
