Welcome to You Ask Andy

John MacDonald, age 12, of Sparks, Nev., for his question:

WHERE DO WE GET MOHAIR?

Mohair is the name given to the hair of the Angora goat. This animal is native to Asia Minor and also is raised in South Africa, California and Texas.

The name mohair also is applied to the lustrous, long wearing fabrics which are made of the hair of the Angora goat.

Mohair is smooth and resilient. It can be dyed to give brilliant permanent colors to decorative fabrics used to make draperies and clothing, such as men's suits and women's coats.

Mohair also is used to make fabrics that must withstand rough wear, such as furniture upholstery.

Mohair is sometimes incorrectly called alpaca, a fleece which is made from the hair of the alpaca.
