WHO BUILT THE ARCH OF TRIUMPH?
At the head of a wide, tree lined avenue called Champs Elysees in Paris stands an impressive monument called the Arch of Triumph. In French it is called the Arc de Triomphe. Napoleon started the arch as a monument to his troops in 1806, and Louis Philippe completed it in 1836.
The Arch of Triumph stands about 164 feet high and 147 feet wide. The central archway is 48 feet wide.
The inner walls of the monument bear the names of 386 of Napoleon's generals and 96 of his triumphs. Jean Francois Therese Chalgrin designed the arch while sculptor Francois Rude designed one group of statues along the outer walls of the arch.
The French made the grave of their Unknown Soldier beneath the arch after World War I. An eternal flame burns there in his honor.
