Denise Ramirez, age 15, of Cleveland, Ohio, for her question:
WHERE IS OLD BAILEY?
Old Bailey is the common name for the main criminal court of London. The Old Bailey has several courts and each one holds sessions at least four times a year. The court is located on a street called Old Bailey. This street once formed part of a bailey, an area between the inner and outer city walls, in medieval London.
The London city government built the Sessions House in 1550. This building became known as the Old Bailey. Persons held at nearby Newgate Prison were tried in the Old Bailey. The present court building was opened in 1907.
A number of famous cases have been held in the Old Bailey. One of them was the treason trial of judges responsible for the execution of Charles I.
Also held in the Old Bailey was the treason trial of William Joyce, the man who broadcast for Nazi Germany during World War II as Lord Haw Haw.
The famous morals trial of writer playwright Oscar Wilde was also held in the famous Old Bailey.
