Patrick Zeller, age 15, of Baltimore, Md., for his question:
IS THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS STILL GOING?
An international association of countries to maintain peace among the nations of the world was started in 1920 after World War I. Unfortunately, the League was dissolved in April 1946. It was, however, replaced in many ways by the United Nations.
The victors of the war, including France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and the United States, drew up the constitution for the League in 1919. The headquarters was located in Geneva, Switzerland.
President Woodrow Wilson of the United States was the chief planner of the League, but he could not persuade the U.S. to join it.
President Wilson and members of the United States Senate differed over the terms on which the United States would join the organization. Within a few years after the Senate rejected the treaty, most Americans decided there was no need to concern themselves with conflicts overseas, and the United States never did join the League of Nations.
