Welcome to You Ask Andy

Donald Nance Jr., age 13, of Chester, Pa., for his question:

WHO WAS JOHN PAUL JONES?

John Paul Jones often is called the Father of the American Navy. His heroism against a larger and better equipped fleet established a tradition that has never been forgotten.

"I have not yet begun to fight," was John Paul Jones' reply to a British demand to surrender. The famous line has since become a famous Navy slogan.

Jones was born in Scotland in 1747 and sent to sea when he was 12 years old. He was John Paul at birth, but added the name Jones to hide his identity years later when he moved to America. He was a captain by this time, and fled to America to escape a murder charge.

At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Jones received a commission as a lieutenant in the Continental Navy and became the first lieutenant of the first naval ship bought by the Continental Congress. He later took command of other ships and was made a captain.

In 1777, he was probably the first ship captain to fly the new American flag.

In 1779, Jones took command of the Bonhomme Richard. His squadron met a large British convoy in the North Sea. Jones' ship attacked the leading ship of the enemy force, even though it was larger and better than his. After three hours of hand to hand fighting, the British surrendered.

Jones was finally elected to the Hall of Fame in 1925.
