Greg Corley, age 14, of Albuquerque, N.M., for his question:
WHERE IS THE VOLCANO "EL MISTI?
El Misti is a beautiful cone shaped volcano that is located in southern Peru in South America. It lies in the Western Cordillera about 10 miles northeast of Arequipa
This famous mountain is 19,101 feet high. It is one of hundreds of volcanoes in the Cordillera. But none of the others surpasses E1Misti in beauty and symmetry.
El Misti was of great religious significance to the ancient Incas when Arequipa was one of their strongholds. The volcano figures in many Peruvian legends.
The cone of E1 Misti, snowcapped most of the year, furnishes water used to irrigate the fields around Arequipa.,
Harvard University established an observatory near the summit of E1 Misti some years ago.
