John Hammond, age 14, of Barre, Vt., for his question:
WHO WAS CARRY NATION?
Carry Nation became famous for her violent efforts to stop the sale of alcoholic liquors in the United States. She carried the temperance crusade from the level of education to that of action and helped bring on national prohibition in 1919.
Born in Garrard County, Kentucky, in 1846, her first husband was a drunkard who died shortly after their marriage. Her second husband was s lawyer and minister named David Nation.
The Nations settled in Kansas in 1889. The state law banned liquor sales but it was not enforced. Mrs. Nation at first prayed outside saloons and later began to smash them.
Nearly six feet tail and very strong, Mrs. Nation did much damage. At first she used stones but later she switched to a hatchet.
She closed all of the saloons in her own town, and then moved to other Kansas cities. When she entered states where liquor sales were legal, she was often arrested for disturbing the peace.
