Welcome to You Ask Andy

John Holienberger, age 11, of Longview, Wash., for his question:

WHEN DID WE START RECEIVING VACATIONS?

The custom of giving employees a regular vacation with pay began fairly recently in our history. The practice started with the development of factories, large stores and large business offices. It all started during the 1800s.

During the last century, employers discovered that employees worked more efficiently after receiving a vacation. Also, many labor union leaders saw great value in regular vacations.

Now vacations form an important and standard part in every person's life. Some young persons have summer vacations that last several months. And for most adults, the vacation is a definite period of time when he does not have to work at his regular job.

Doctors agree that vacations are important. They have long recognized that many illnesses of the body and nervous system can be cured by a rest from normal, everyday activity. The vacation is just a change in routine that helps restore people's bodies, minds and spirits.

Present day transportation has made it possible for vacationers to travel to almost any place they choose. And this has given rise to the important tourist industry.
