HOW MANY SEATS WERE IN THE ROMAN COLOSSEUM?
Present day Rome's ancient architectural gems include the famous Colosseum. Construction was started in A.D. 70 and the amphitheater was finished 10 years later. Shaped like a football stadium, the Colosseum could seat about 45,000 spectators.
The Colosseum was used for such spectacles as fights between gladiators and between men and wild animals.
The Colosseum is 161 feet high, about 600 feet long and 500 feet wide. Awnings could be hung from the walls to protect spectators from the sun.
The oval shaped arena is 282 feet long and 207 feet across at its widest point. The arena originally could be flooded for water spectacles.
