Jennifer Smith, age 9, of Mundelein, I11., for her question:
HOW MANY KINDS OF KANGAROOS ARE THERE?
Wild kangaroos can be found only in Australia. They are marsupials, which means the mother has a pouch on her abdomen in which she feeds and cares for her young. Zoologists tell us there are five species of kangaroos: the antelope kangaroo, the great gray kangaroo, red kangaroos, wallaroos and western gray kangaroos. Largest are the red and western gray kangaroos. They grow to be about six feet tall and weigh about 100 pounds. Females are usually smaller than the males.
All kangaroos have large, powerful hind legs and small front legs. When chased, they can hop at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Some can leap over obstacles six feet high. When moving slowly, they walk on all four legs.
