Welcome to You Ask Andy

Noni Pryor, age 17, of Bennington, Vt., for her question:

HOW DID THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL RECEIVE ITS NAME?

One of the most famous institutions of higher learning in New York City is the Juilliard School. The school was originally named the Juilliard School of Music in 1946 when it was formed by the amalgamation of the Institution of Musical Art and the Juilliard Graduate School.

The Institute of Musical Art had been founded by the American conductor Frank Damrosch and the American philanthropist James Loeb in 1905. The Juilliard Graduate School had been established in 1924 through a legacy of the American music patron Augustus Juilliard.

In 1968 a drama division was added and in 1969 the school's name was changed to the Juiiliard School.

The degree of either bachelor of music or fine arts is awarded upon completion both of a musical curriculum and a course of studies in the humanities or liberal arts. The master of music and the doctor of musical arts degrees are also conferred.

Professional training is given in all of the performing arts.

The Juiliiard School moved into Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in October 1969.
