Jason Siebrandt, age 15, of Butte, Mont., for his question:
ROW DID STEEPLECHASING GET ITS NAME?
Steeplechasing is the sport of horse racing over obstacles. The sport originated in England and is the outgrowth of fox hunting on horseback. The name comes from races that hunters staged across country to "yonder church steeple."
Races are described as being "over bush," "over timber" or "over hurdles," depending on the obstacles used in steeplechasing. Today jockeys ride thoroughbred horses at breakneck speed in steeplechases.
Organized United States steeplechasing began shortly after the Civil War. In addition to races at some major tracks, steeplechase meetings are also held by fox hunting clubs in various parts of the country.
