Welcome to You Ask Andy

Elizabeth Harper, age 13, of Dayton, Ohio, for her question:

WHERE DOES THE CAPUCHIN MONKEY LIVE WILD?

You can probably find the capuchin monkey in your local zoo, but to find him living wild you'd have to go to some zoologists tell us that the capuchins are the most intelligent of all the New World monkeys.

L  Capuchins spend most of their time in the trees but they may come to the ground during the day. They eat fruit, seeds, insects and occasional small backboned animals such as lizards and young squirrels. The monkeys live in groups of from five to 30. Each group has about the same number of young and adults, with two or three times as many adult female as adult males.

Young capuchins form social ties with one another while playing. The adults, especially the females, spend much time grooming one another's fur.  Capuchine enjoy this physical contact and it helps preserve social ties among the adult members of the group.  A capuchin measures about 17 inches long, not including an 18 inch  tail. It weighs about five pounds.
