Studebaker was the name of an automobile that once was very popular."') It was made by the Studebaker Corp. in South Bend, Ind. The company merged with Packard Motors in 1954 and in 1966, the firm stopped making automobiles. In 1967 there was another merger and the firm became Studebaker Worthington, Inc.
A man named Clement Studebaker opened a blacksmith and wagon shop in 1852 with his brother Henry. In 1868 it became the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Co. and the organization soon became the largest wagon manufacturer in the country. It had a world market.
A brother named John moved to California in 1853 and during the Gold Rush, he manufacturered wheelbarrows for the miners. When he saved enough money, he returned to South Bend and bought his brother Henrys interest in the firm.
In 1902 the firm made its first electric powered vehicle and in 1904 it began making gasoline powered automobiles. By 1920, the Studebaker company was producing automobiles and trucks and exclusively.
