Welcome to You Ask Andy

Judy Loveland, age 11, of Annapolis, Md., for her question:

WHERE DOES THE MACAQUE LIVE WILD?

Macaque is the name of several species of large, powerful monkeys. You'll find some in zoos but most live wild in the warm areas of southern Asia. One species, the Barbary ape, lives in northern Africa while another, the Japanese macaque, lives as far north as Honshu Island.

Most aacaques have gray or brown fur, with pink or red skin on the face and rump. Some have long tails while others have short tails or no tails at all.

Males have long, sharp teeth which they use in fighting. Strong a males rule most groups of macaques.

Many macaques live both in trees and on the ground. Most species eat fruits, grains, insects and vegetables, but the crab eating monkey eats crabs and clams.

The rhesus monkey, a macaque of India, is used in medical research and may be seen on many monkey islands in zoos.

People of Malaysia train the pig tailed macaque to pick coconuts from trees.

At least one species of macaque, the lion tailed macaque of India, is classified as an endangered species.
