Scott Autrey, age 13, of Glendale, Ariz., for his question:
HOW MANY GAMES DID KNUTE ROCKNE'S TEAMS WIN?
Sports experts say that Knute Rockne was perhaps the greatest college football coach of all time. There are certainly none that were more famous. In his years as football coach at the University of Notre dame in Indiana, his teams won 105 games, tied 5 and lost only 12.
Rockne became head coach at Notre Dame in 1918. He developed the famous "Notre Dame shift" which had the backfield players move to a new ,spot before the football is snapped from center. The shift was responsible for many wins because it caught the opponents by surprise.
Rockne was born in Norway and came to the United States when he was 5 years old. He worked as a janitor in the chemistry lab at Notre Dame so he could attend classes. He was also on the school's football team.
Along with a team member named Gus Dorais, Rockne popularized the forward pass as a student player on Notre Dame's team. The pass was used to defeat Army 35 to 13 in a major upset in 1913.
