Lydia Cole, age 17, of Casper, Wyo., for her question:
JUST WHAT IS A GEISHA?
A geisha is a member of a class of professional entertainers of Japan. She is a woman who is skilled in the art of conversation and can also sing, dance and play musical instruments. The name "geisha" means "art person."
A geisha is hired to provide diverting company for men, especially at business parties. She is definitely a woman of artistic accomplishments and does not provide personal physical favors.
In the olden days a geisha started her training at the age of 7. Traditionally she was then bound by her parents in a contract with an employer for a term of many years. This system of selling a daughter became illegal after World War II and the practice has since disappeared.
A geisha will wear beautiful clothing of traditional ancient designs as she graciously talks, sings and dances.
