Tom Greens, age 12, of Bessemer, Ala., for his question:
HOW LARGE IS THE DOG?
Chihuahua is a kind of tiny toy dog that originated from an ancient breed known to the Toltec Indians in Mexico more than 1,000 years ago. The small dog is about 12 inches in length and weighs between one and seven pounds.
Here's how you pronounce the dog's name: chee WAA waa.
The modern breed of dog was discovered about 1850 in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. That's how it received its name.
A Chihuahua can be found in two types: one with a smooth coat and one with a long haired coat. Both types have rounded heads, slightly arched necks, a level back and moderately long tails. They also have ears that are usually erect and large, and tend to flare outward.
The dogs can be found in any color, including white, black and all shades of brown.
