Welcome to You Ask Andy

Daniel Travis, age 15, of Baltimore, Md., for his question:

WHO WAS SATCHEL PAIGE?

Satchel Paige is the name of an old time baseball player who has become almost legendary. Born Leroy Robert Paige in Mobile, Ala., in 1906, he was one of the greatest right handed pitchers in baseball's history.

Paige's career was a remarkably long one that lasted for some 40 years. He started pitching with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1920 and pitched for more than 20 years in a number of black leagues.

He was over 40 when he finally got his chance to play in the major leagues. He was signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1948 and helped them win the pennant and World Series that year.

From 1951 to 1953 he was a relief pitcher for the St. Louis Browns and in 1952 was named to the American League All Star team. He didn't retire until 1968 when he was 62. He was 76 years old when he died in 1982.

Paige was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.
