Glenn Thompson, age 9, of Danville, Ill., for his question:
WHEN DID LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL START?
Boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 play Little League Baseball, first organized in the United States in 1939. It has now spread around the world from the birthplace of the program, in Williamsport, Pa.
Little League is a modification of adult professional baseball. The diamond is only two thirds the size of the one used in the majors, and the bat is also shorter and lighter. Little League games are limited to six innings and the season runs only about 15 games.
Standardized equipment and uniforms are usually provided by local sponsors. Mandatory equipment includes rubber cleated shoes and helmets.
Serving as coaches axe parents and other adult volunteers.
After local and regional playoffs, an annual world series is held.
Now part of the program is s Senior Division for players between the ages of 13 and 15 plus a Big League for those from 16 to 18.
