WHAT DOES UNESCO DO?
UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. The initials mean United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The agency works for understanding and cooperation among people everywhere.
The agency's objective is to promote a respect for justice, rule of law, human rights and basic freedoms for all people.
The group was established in 1946 and has headquarters in Paris. UNESCO has 131 members and carries out programs only at the request of its members.
UNESCO stresses education, the spread of culture and an increase in scientific knowledge. It stimulates scientific research on such basic problems as the use of arid lands and knowledge of the world's oceans.
UNESCO encourages artists, scientists, teachers and students to travel, study and work in other countries. It sponsors model libraries and art exhibits. It advises governments on how to restore and preserve national monuments.
