Erica Proctor, age 10, of Columbia,Tenn., for her question:
WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE FRIGATE BIRD?
The frigate is a large bird that is found over a number of oceans. There are five living species known.
Fregata magnifficens lives in the Florida Keys and in the southern United States. The F. aquila is found on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean. F. minor is found in tropical areas around the world. F. andrewsii is found on several islands in the Indian Ocean and F. ariel, the smallest of frigate birds, is found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, in the southern hemisphere.
The largest frigate bird, F. magnifficens, has a body that is 40 inches long, of which 17 inches is tail. It has a wing span that is about seven feet, possessing a larger wing span in proportion to its weight than any other bird in the world.
The frigate bird, also called man of war bird, lives on fish that it steals from other birds. It also catches flying fish and snatches dead fish from the surface of the ocean.
