Anita Kahner, age 15, of Butte, Mt., for her question:
WHAT WERE THE ZIEGFELD FOLLIES?
Back in 1907, an American theatrical producer named Florenz Ziegfeld introduced a revue to the American musical stage. The successful show then became an annual event. Famous for beautiful chorus girls and extravagant, dazzling sets, the revues became known as "The Ziegfeld Follies."
After the first revue was staged in New York City in 1907, productions were staged annually until Ziegfeld's death in 1932. Also, special editions of "The Ziegfeld Follies" were produced at intervals until 1957.
Ziegfeld was born in Chicago and promoted musical attractions at the Chicago Worlds Exposition of 1893 and later managed a number of entertainers including W. C. Fields and Fanny Brice.
Ziegfeld also produced traditional musical shows including "Show Boat" in 1927 by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, and "Bitter Sweet" in 1929 by Noel Coward.
