HOW TALL IS THE EIFFEL TOWER?
A landmark in Paris is the cast iron Eiffel Tower that rises to a height of 984 feet. An excellent example of early cast iron construction on a gigantic scale, it was designed and built by a French civil engineer named Alexandre Gustave Eiffel for the Paris World's Fair of 1889.
At the present time, modern broadcasting antennae are mounted on the top of the tower
The lower section is made up of four immense anchored legs set on masonry piers. The legs curve inward until they united in a single tapered tower.
Platforms, each with observation decks, are at three levels. A restaurant is located on the first level.
The Eiffel Tower, constructed of about 7,000 tons of iron, has stairs and el~ev,ators. A meteorological station, a radio communications station and a television transmission antenna are located at the top. Also near the top is a suite of rooms once used by Eiffel.
The Eiffel Tower, which rises over the city from the left bank of the Sine River, has become a great symbol of Paris.
