David Yeager, age 13, of Chattanooga, Tenn., for his question
WHAT WAS THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN THE U.S.?
A book called 'Whole Book of Psalms" or "Bay Psalm Book" is considered to be the first book printed in the 13 colonies. It was printed in Cambridge, Mass., in 1640.
A man named Stephen Day was the first printer in what is now the United States His name is sometimes spelled Daye.
A locksmith from Cambridge, England, Day contracted to go to Massachusetts in 1628 with the Rev. Jesse Glover, who brought with him a printing press that he planned to use in missionary work among the Indians.
Glover died on the way to America but his widow, Elizabeth Glover, set up a printing establishment in Cambridge, Mass., with Day as the manager in 1629.
The printing of the first book came about 10 years after the shop was opened. And the actual printing of the book was probably done by Stephen Day's son, Matthew.
