Connie Aldrich, age 14, of St. Augustine, Fla., for her question:
WHO WERE THE FOUR HORSEMEN?
There have been two sets of four horsemen: the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The first set mentioned here came from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. They formed an outstanding football team backfield that made history from 1922 to 1924. The four included quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, fullback Elmer Leyden, left halfback Jim Crowley and right halfback Don Miller.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are mentioned in the sixth chapter of the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, The Revelations of St. John the Divine. The chapter tells of a scroll in God’s right hand that is sealed with seven seals. When the first four of these seals are opened, four horsemen appear. Their horses are white, red, black and pale. Pale, literally, is a greenish yellow color. The four represent Conquest, War, Famine and Death.
The four horsemen are often featured in art and literature.
