Martin Keuffel, age 13, of Low, for his question:
WHAT IS ETHYL GASOLINE?
Ethyl is the name often given to the premium grade of gasoline. The name came about bec se of the gasoline's tetraethyl lead content.
Tetraethyl lead is n ingredient added to gasoline to improve the performance of engine. It is called an antiknock additive because it reduces the "pinging" sound that engines often make.
An engine that burns leaded gasoline, or gasoline containing tetraethyl lead, can give off an exhaust that includes chemical compounds that pollute the air. To reduce lead pollution, oil companies now make low lead or unleaded gasolines. These fuels contain a larger proportion of gasoline ingredients that resist knocking, so the need for tetraethyl lead is greatly reduced or eliminated.
