DOES THE DAHLIA GROW FROM A SEED?

Dahlia is the name of a popular group of flowers. Dahlias do not grow from seeds but instead grow from tuberous or thick, fleshy roots that look somewhat like bulbs.

The dahlia tuber should be planted in rich, well drained soil and in full sun after all danger of frost has passed. Dahlia stalks are brittle. As they grow, the taller kinds should be tied to stakes.

At planting time, the roots should be separated carefully and tubes planted about six inches deep. The plants should flower in the late summer.

The first dahlias came from Mexico. They are now grown throughout the United States, in southern Canada and in Europe. They are named for the Swedish botanist, Anders Dahl.

Dahlias come in many shapes and colors. Some are shaped like balls while others have long, flat petals. Cactus dahlias have double blossoms with long, twisted petals.

In the fall, the roots should be dug up and stored for winter in a dry place, at a temperature of 40 to 55 degrees fahrenheit. Storing the root clump with soil attached will stop shriveling.
