Lisa Reed, age 15, of Lynn, Mass., for her question:
WHY DO WE REMEMBER ABIGAIL ADAMS?
Abigail Adams is remembered in history as the only woman who was both the wife of a United States President and also the mother of one. Her husband was John Adams, the nation's second chief executive, and her son John Quincy Adams was the sixth.
Abby, as she was called by her friends, was the daughter of a Boston minister. She was 17 years old when she married the young lawyer in 1761. The frail, delicate young lady became a most remarkable woman.
Abigail and John had five children. After the American Revolution, President George Washington sent John Adams to London as the new nation's ambassador. King George III and the English nobility were not pleasant to the new ambassador, but Abby made the experience bearable.
Abigail later became one of the most influential women of her day, especially as a social arbiter and fashion leader.
