Welcome to You Ask Andy

Mike Watts, age 15, of Lynn, Mass., for his question:

WHEN DID HANK AARON SET THE HOME RUN RECORD?

Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run on April 8, 1974 and thus topped the 714 of Babe Ruth. This, according to the experts and fans, made Aaron the greatest ail time home run hitter in baseball.

Aaron's full name is Henry L. Aaron. He was born in 1934 in Mobile, Ala., and in 1951 he was signed by the Milwaukee Braves (after 1966, the Atlanta Braves).

In 1954, after three seasons in the minor leagues, Aaron began his major league career. A right fielder, he became the highest paid player in the history of professional baseball in 1972 when he signed a three year contract for a reported total of $600,000.

In 1974 Aaron was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. He retired after the 1976 season with 755 home runs.
