Carla Potter, age 14, of Casper, Wyo., for her question:
WHO WAS EL CID?
E1 Cid is the name of s real Spanish warrior who later became a legend. He has been made into a national hero and the embodiment of chivalry and virtue.
Originally named Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, he lived 1040 until 1099 and became known as El Cid Campeador, "The Lord Champion." Son of a minor Castilian nobleman, he grew up in the household of a future king. Later he distinguished himself as the king's premier knight. His military career culminated in his capture of Valencia, which he held and ruled.
El Cid's exploits are recorded in the 12th century Latin chronicle "Historia Rodericin and the most famous Spanish epic "E1 Cantar de mio Cid" ("The Song of the Cid"). Composed about 1200, the epic describes in a realistic, convincing manner the golden age of medieval chivalry, as well as El Cid's heroic deeds.
The epic contrasts worthless nobles of high social rank with such men as El Cid, who are of more humble status but fight for honor and glory, are prudent, brave, generous and loyal to family, king and religion, and thus superior in virtue.
El Cid is also celebrated in some of Spain's finest ballads and dramatic works.
