Welcome to You Ask Andy

Daniel Walsh, age 12, of Jackson, Miss., for his question:

WHERE IS ENDERBY LAND?

Enderby Land is part of Antarctica. It is located on the Indian Ocean and it projects from the northeastern coast of Antarctica. Enderby Land is claimed by Australia.

A British whaler named John Biscoe discovered Enderly Land in 1831 and named it in honor of his employer, a London merchant named Samuel Enderby.

Between 1929 and 1931 a British Australia New Zealand expedition under Sir Douglas Mawson and a Norwegian expedition under Hjalmar Riiser Larsen conducted investigations all through the region.

The Mawson expedition followed the coast eastward from Enderby Land to latitude 67 degrees South and found evidence of more land to the east. Extensive hydrologic, meteorological and biological data were collected, and a good area for whaling was found.

Enderby Land is located between longitude 50 degrees and 60 degrees east.
