Kay McDougall, age 14, of Fargo, N.D., for her question:
HOW WAS VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK NAMED?
Voyageurs National Park is located in northern Minnesota right on the United States border with Canada. The park was named after early French Canadian traders and frontiersmen who were known as "voyageurs" because they traveled the scenic waterways of the area.
The park was created in 1971 and it was officially established in 1975. It is made up of many lakes, streams and islands.
More than a third of the park's area is water. There is a complex network of inland waterways that were carved out of the landscape by ancient glaciers.
Among the points of great interest: Namakan Lake, Rainy Lake, Kabetogama Lake and Kabetogama Peninsula.
Voyageurs National Park abounds in wildlife including moose, bears, wolves, deer, beaver and a wide variety of birds and fish.
